The Department of Biology and Pharmaceutical Engineering, Taiyuan University of Technology was established in 2002, formerly known as the Department of Chemistry and Pharmaceuticals, School of Chemical Engineering, Taiyuan University of Technology. The profession of pharmaceutical engineering has been recruiting students since 1999, and the bioengineering has been recruiting students since 2002. The Department of Biology and Pharmaceutical Engineering has a faculty with high professional quality teaching experience and a reasonable academic background with age structure. At present, the faculty consists of 17 teachers, including 2 professors, 10 associate professors, 5 lecturers, and 16 members received the PH. D degrees.

The Department of Biological and Pharmaceutical Engineering currently has about 350 undergraduate students and about 40 postgraduate students. In recent years, it has continuously cultivated high-quality personnel for the pharmaceutical industry. The department owns a laboratory area about 850 square meters, equipped with infrared spectrometer, liquid chromatograph, gas chromatograph, ultraviolet spectrophotometer, fluorescence spectrometer, potential meter, ultraviolet visible near infrared spectrophotometer and etc., which provide a good teaching and research condition.

The Department of Biological and Pharmaceutical Engineering has long adhered to undergraduate cultivation and actively carried out teaching research and teaching reform activities. In the past five years, more than 20 national grade, provincial level, and school-level large-scale innovation projects have been undertaken. One collaborative education project of the Ministry of Education, two provincial education reform projects, one provincial virtual simulation experiment project, and four school education reform projects have been undertaken. One textbook has been published, two teachers won the third prize of the school’s undergraduate teaching excellence award, presided over and won the second prize of Shanxi Provincial Teaching Achievement Award (2001), and won the advanced collective of the school-level "three education" work (2013).

While vigorously strengthening the education of undergraduates, the Department of Biological and Pharmaceutical Engineering is also actively carrying out scientific research work. It has undertaken nearly 10 National Natural Science Foundation projects, more than 30 provincial projects including key research and development projects of Shanxi Province, key scientific and technological projects of Shanxi Province, science and technology projects of colleges and universities in Shanxi Province, and projects for returned overseas students in Shanxi Province. It has authorized more than 20 invention patents, and more than 100 SCI papers have been published. The 2 monographs have been published also. One project owned the second prize of Shanxi Science and Technology Progress Award (2008). In recent years, it has established a long-term stable industry-university-research cooperation relationship with Sinopharm Group Weiqida Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., Shanxi Zhendong Ante Biological Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., Yabao Pharmaceutical Group, Shanxi Dayu Biotechnology Co., Ltd., Shanxi Xintianyuan Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., etc.
