The College of Biomedical Engineering

The College of Biomedical Engineering at Taiyuan University of Technology was established in September 2018, originating from a biomechanics team founded in the 1980s by Yang Guitong, a famous Chinese mechanic. A complete system of undergraduate, master, doctor and postdoctoral personnel training, the first level discipline doctor authorization point and postdoctoral mobile station of Biomedical Engineering has been established. The National Experimental Teaching demonstration Center of Engineering Mechanics, the Shanxi Province Key Laboratory of Material Strength and Structural Impact, and the Key Laboratory of "1331 project" in Shanxi Province was built by the college of Biomedical Engineering and mechanics discipline.

Currently, the college has 56 faculty members, including 9 professors, 25 associate professors. The proportion of teachers with doctoral degrees reaches 98%, and teachers under 45 years old account for 80%. Nearly half of the teachers had overseas study and research experience. Among the teaching staff, there are 1 provincial “Top innovative talent”, 3 provincial “Youth academic leaders”, and 26 talents of “Sanjin talent plan”, and 1 “Outstanding innovation team” of Shanxi Colleges and Universities. In addition, a group of well-known experts from home and abroad are invited to participate in the personnel training and scientific research of the college.

The college of Biomedical Engineering has set up two undergraduate majors: Biomedical Engineering and Pharmaceutical Engineering. Biomedical Engineering is mainly oriented to biological materials, medical testing and medical equipment industry. It focuses on training high-quality scientific and technical talents with professional theoretical and practical abilities in biomechanics and human body protection and rehabilitation, biomaterials and regenerative medicine, bioinformatics and medical biotechnology, and biomedical precise detection and instruments. Pharmaceutical Engineering is mainly oriented to the new pharmaceutical industry, focusing on training high-quality talents who master the basic theories and skills of biotechnology as well as the basic principles and practical skills of modern biological engineering.

The College encourages students to enter the scientific research team in the lower grades and carry out scientific research activities to cultivate students' innovative consciousness and comprehensive quality. The students have won the first, second and third prizes in the national innovation and entrepreneurship competition for many times. The college also cooperates fully with large hospitals and medical institutions, and has signed strategic cooperation agreements with some large biomedical enterprises. It has established the clinical teaching hospital of Taiyuan University of technology-Jinzhong No.1 Hospital, Taiyuan University of technology-Shanxi Medical University Joint Innovation Research Institute, to provide good support for college students in medical teaching, cognitive practice and employment and other aspects.

The college has established corresponding experimental platforms at various levels, such as molecules, cells, tissues, organs, etc., and providing personnel training environment for first-class talents. The faculty members of college had undertaken more than 100 important scientific research projects. Outstanding students can be recommended for postgraduate study or study for doctoral degree in advance. The graduates are welcomed by enterprises and institutions in related industries, relevant research institutions and universities at home and abroad.

With the implementation of healthy China strategy, the integration and innovation of medical and industry is facing a golden opportunity. As the only Biomedical Engineering doctor authorization point and postdoctoral research mobile station in Shanxi Province, its vision is superior of biomedical engineering education, research, and professional services for the betterment of human health.
